Construction firms and building trades in Austria

Master builders, electrical contractors, plumbers and heating engineers, roofers, painters and tilers: for building materials suppliers, manufacturers and software providers who want to reach the businesses of one trade in a federal state by post or plan a sales territory.

Our Austrian database holds 218,653 records (as of 3 November 2026); they are not yet assigned to industries. The quote states the size available for this industry.

Export of the whole industry: €449 (final price). Selections by federal state, district or your own filters are quoted on request.

Official statistics: 43,120 businesses in Austria according to Statistics Austria, structural business statistics 2024 (table G_UNT1) (reference year 2024, table created 30 June 2026). Section F construction (divisions 41 to 43: buildings, civil engineering and specialised construction activities). This is the size of the market, not the size of our database.

Preparing a regional list for suppliers

First define the trade and the delivery area, for example plumbing and heating firms in one federal state. Making the website a required field helps you check each firm’s services afterwards.

The industry figure covers different construction and finishing businesses. It is neither a count of a single trade nor proof of a current trade licence in GISA.

Price of the whole industry: €449. A selection by region, sub-industry or required fields is quoted individually; the whole-industry price is not a price promise for the filtered selection.

What counts as Construction and building trades

Official statistics have no category called “crafts”. They classify businesses by activity: construction is section F of ÖNACE, with the divisions construction of buildings, civil engineering and specialised construction activities. Whether a business practises a regulated trade is governed by the Trade Act instead; the two classifications only partly overlap.

Bakers, hairdressers and car repair shops are crafts, but not construction. This industry covers construction and the building trades. Motor vehicle businesses are under Motor trade and garages.

Trade licence register: public, but for individual searches only

There is a public register for construction and the building trades, but it cannot be searched like a business directory.

Regulated trades
Master builder (§ 94 no. 5 GewO) and electrical engineering (§ 94 no. 16 GewO) are regulated trades; the business needs a certificate of competence.
GISA
Trade licences are recorded in the Austrian trade licence register and can be viewed free of charge via the GISA search. A request for information must relate to a single person or business (§ 365e(3) GewO).
Firmenbuch
A construction company organised as a GmbH is in the companies register, a master painter trading as a sole proprietor usually is not: sole traders only have to register once they are subject to accounting obligations (§ 8(1) UGB). For small businesses the phone number is therefore usually only public in their own legal notice.

Not in the export

  • master craftsman title and name of the managing director under trade law
  • guild membership and quality labels
  • number of employees and turnover
  • reference projects and current building sites
  • mobile numbers of individual fitters

These 15 columns are included.

Trade and service area: two pitfalls when selecting

In the statistics a business has exactly one main activity. A plumber who also refurbishes bathrooms and installs solar panels appears under 43.22, not additionally under electrical installation. Filtering by trade gives you the businesses with that focus, not all that offer the service.

The region follows the business address. A roofer based just outside Vienna often works in Vienna but counts as Lower Austria. For field sales territories along a state border, it is worth including the neighbouring districts.

If a business is a sole proprietorship, its data are personal data. For postal marketing, the information duty under Art. 14 GDPR and the right to object apply. Sales calls and marketing emails require prior consent (§ 174 TKG 2021).

Example request

We sell heat pumps through specialist trade and are looking for businesses with main activity 43.22 in Upper Austria and Salzburg that publish a website, for a postal mailing with a training invitation. Please exclude developers and pure design offices. How many records is that, and how current are the data?
