What counts as IT, software and technology

The industry covers ÖNACE divisions 62 (computer programming, consultancy and related activities) and 63 (information service activities). Publishing, broadcasting and telecommunications belong to the same section J but are not included.

IT companies almost always have a website. On the other hand, many are sole proprietorships of freelancers working from home; their business address is then a home address.

No specific register, but a strict legal notice duty

IT services usually do not require a regulated trade licence. There is no specialist register.

Legal notice
Anyone running a website must state, among other things, their name or company name, geographical address and an email address under § 5 ECG. For IT companies the legal notice is therefore the most important source.
Firmenbuch and GISA
GmbHs and FlexCos are in the companies register, sole traders with a trade licence in GISA. Both registers are designed for individual searches.
Home addresses
For sole traders the business address is often their home address. That is permissible for a postal mailing but sensitive under data protection law: observe the information duty under Art. 14 GDPR and the right to object.

Development, consulting or operations: what you are looking for

Classes 62.01 and 62.02 overlap heavily in practice. A system integrator that develops software and advises appears under its main focus. For a broad target group, the whole of division 62 is the better choice.

If you only want businesses with offices, you can filter by legal form: corporations are more likely to have their own premises than sole traders.

Marketing emails to IT companies require prior consent, even if the address is in the legal notice (§ 174(3) TKG 2021).
