Central Register of Associations: individual searches yes, collective searches no

Associations are listed in the Central Register of Associations (ZVR). It is public but not intended for lists.

Public data
The public data include name, ZVR number, seat and address for service, rule of representation, and names and roles of the representatives (§ 16 VerG 2002). A free online individual search is provided (§ 19(3) VerG).
No collective searches
Collective searches of the register of associations are not allowed (§ 17(9) VerG). A list of associations therefore cannot be compiled from the register.
Gyms and event organisers
Commercial sports and leisure businesses are in the companies register or GISA as businesses and publish their contact details in their legal notice.

  • names of chairs and board members
  • membership numbers

  • funding and budgets
  • event calendars

These 15 columns are included.

Association or business: an important difference

A gym can be a business or an association, a theatre a GmbH or part of the city administration. For your selection, the legal form therefore matters as much as the class.

For small associations the address for service is often a private address. That is permissible for postal mailings but sensitive under data protection law: the export contains no names of officials, and we take objections seriously.

Marketing emails and sales calls to associations require prior consent (§ 174 TKG 2021).

Example request

We sell sports ground equipment and are looking for sports clubs and facilities in group 93.1 in Upper Austria and Styria with a complete address, for a postal mailing in spring. How many records is that?
