Businesses: active businesses in the market economy (ÖNACE B to S excluding O and S 94), counted in the federal state of their seat. Births: enterprise births in 2024; deaths in 2024 are preliminary. Local units: business locations, summed from the federal state’s NUTS 3 regions; one business can have local units in several federal states.

What the table shows

Three federal states account for 56.2% of businesses: Vienna (150,781), Lower Austria (109,721), Upper Austria (92,562).
Density: per 1,000 inhabitants the range runs from 60.3 in Upper Austria to 81.3 in Salzburg. Order: Salzburg 81.3, Tyrol 78.5, Vienna 74.3, Carinthia 67.2, Vorarlberg 65.9, Styria 65.2, Lower Austria 63.5, Burgenland 62.9, Upper Austria 60.3.
Births: relative to the number of active businesses, most businesses were founded in Vienna in 2024 (7.0 per 100 businesses) and fewest in Vorarlberg (5.4); Austria as a whole 6.3.
Local units per business: 1.2 across Austria; many businesses have only one location, larger ones several.

For territory planning this means: a nationwide selection is concentrated in Vienna, Lower Austria, Upper Austria. If you want to work a particular region, name the federal state or district as a filter from the start.

Definitions

An active business is a business that had turnover or employees during the reference year. This count gives the total of 628,058 that is also used elsewhere on this website.
A local unit is a geographically separate location of a business, such as a branch or a plant.
Per 1,000 inhabitants: active businesses divided by the population on 1 January 2025, times 1,000, rounded to one decimal place.

Methodological notes

Not covered are agriculture and forestry, public administration and membership organisations.
Preliminary deaths. Whether a business has closed for good is only certain once it shows no activity in the following years either. Statistics Austria therefore marks the 2024 deaths as preliminary.
Industry figures on this website come from the structural business statistics and cannot be added up to the total because of overlaps; more on the database status page.
