From reference year 2023, Statistics Austria includes small businesses for the first time; sections J, M, N, P, Q and R are therefore only partly comparable with 2022. The increase in active businesses from 2022 to 2023 is partly due to this.

What the series shows and what it does not

  • 2021: 35,371 births (6.0%) and 34,906 deaths (5.9%), balance +465.
  • 2022: 36,294 births (6.2%) and 32,255 deaths (5.5%), balance +4,039.
  • 2023: 37,576 births (6.2%) and 34,840 deaths (5.8%), balance +2,736.
  • 2024: 39,554 births (6.3%). Statistics Austria marks the 33,330 deaths as preliminary, so we do not infer a fall in deaths compared with 2023.

By economic section

The rates differ greatly between industries. The 2024 deaths are preliminary, so the 2023 death rate is shown next to them.

Why this matters for address lists

Every year businesses are added and others disappear. A list as of a particular day therefore contains, over time, businesses that no longer exist and lacks new ones. In industries with high rates this happens faster. Ask for the data status of every list and use it promptly. The rates indicate this pace, but they are not the error rate of a particular list.

Definitions

  • Birth: a business starts an activity for the first time. Businesses that become active again within two years after a dormant period, and new units arising from mergers, break-ups or restructuring, do not count (Eurostat glossary “Enterprise birth”).
  • Death: a business ceases its activity without other businesses being involved. Mergers, takeovers and mere changes of industry do not count (Eurostat glossary “Enterprise death”).
  • Birth and death rate: births or deaths as a percentage of active businesses in the same year.

Methodological notes

  • Other start-up statistics. The start-up statistics of the Austrian Economic Chambers use their own definitions and are not comparable with this series.
  • Preliminary values. Values marked * are preliminary according to Statistics Austria and may change in later releases.
  • Not covered are agriculture and forestry, public administration and membership organisations.
